Steve Jobs impactful speech
Steve Jobs talked about three stories from his life. Let's discuss them one by one, and then I'll share my own thoughts about them.
Hello there!
Today, in this newsletter, I want to talk about Steve Jobs' Stanford University speech. It is one of the best speeches I've ever listened to in my life. In that speech, Steve Jobs shared his entire life experiences and his perspective on life. Steve Jobs talked about three stories from his life. Let's discuss them one by one, and then I'll share my own thoughts about them.
Connecting the Dots:
"When Steve Jobs was studying at Reed College, he dropped out after six months. Usually, American universities are very expensive. At the college, Steve Jobs was really disappointed about his college life. He was thinking, 'My family is spending their total savings on my education, and what am I learning from that?' Then, he decided to drop out, and he did. That was a really challenging part of his life; he was sleeping on his friend’s couch. He wasn’t able to eat every day. After that, he decided to take some free classes in his interested fields. Reed College is pretty much specialized in Calligraphy. He took some calligraphy and he learned alphabet fonts and how to present alphabet letters. When he started Apple, he implemented those learning techniques into the elegant typography and design choices in Apple’s products. He said that every event of our lives is like a dot. Every dot is important; we never know which one would change our life.
'You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.'"
Love and Loss:
He spoke about getting fired from Apple, a company he co-founded, and how this seemed like he was fired from his own founded company. After getting fired from Apple, he was so disappointed and depressed by himself. Then, he realized that what he wanted to do and what was his passion couldn’t be changed like that. This setback, he explained, allowed him to fall in love with his work again and create greater impactful companies like Pixar Animation Studio and NeXT. After that, his company Pixar achieved a lot of success and became one of the best companies at that time. Steve Jobs' innovative ideas eventually returned him to the CEO position at Apple, where he worked the tech industry with products like the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. In between that, he fell in love with a girl and later on he got married to that girl.
“Steve Jobs said that life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t loss your faith.”
“Until you find your passions, keep learning and keep searching for your passions.”
Death as a motivator:
In a deeply profound moment, Jobs talked about his battle with pancreatic cancer, emphasizing the importance of cherishing life and not wasting it living someone else's dreams. He said that death is a motivating factor in our lives, not something to be afraid of. We all have a very limited amount of time on Earth, so he said, don't think about what other people would say about you, just think about what your passion is and what you want to be. He believes that if we realize that we will all die after a certain amount of time, then our fear of failure will be nothing. He also explained that when he was going through cancer treatment, he asked himself every day, "If today were my last day, what would I do?" He strongly advised that if you constantly answer "nothing" to this question, then you are not on the right path and you need to change it. He urged the graduates to follow their hearts and intuition, because "everything else is secondary."
Stay Foolish, Stay Hungry: He gave the advice to "stay foolish, stay hungry." "Stay foolish" means to always believe that you can achieve your goals, no matter how impossible they may seem. "Stay hungry" means to always be striving for improvement, and to never stop learning and growing.
His main concept was that, no matter what is going on in your life, you should never be afraid to take risks. We all will die one day, so make the most of your limited time by living an impactful and enjoyable life.
